The City of Fall River lies in Southeastern Massachusetts at the junction of the Taunton River and Mount Hope Bay. Once the textile capital of the world, this historic city was founded as "Troy" in 1804. The popularity of this name compelled the citizenry to dub their city "Fall River," in honor of the cascading falls of the local Quequechan River, in 1834.

Some years later the city gained international notoriety when a wealthy Fall River businessman and his wife were purportedly murdered by their daughter. Ending in an acquittal, the trial of Lizzie Borden continues to spark controversy to this day, and has spawned a litany of books, articles, and even a Broadway show.

But most of all, Fall River is renowned for its rich cultural diversity and maritime heritage. In addition to Battleship Cove, the city is home to the Marine Museum of Fall River, as well as a plethora of fine ethnic restaurants.

FALL RIVER & FALL RIVER: All cruisers are named for prominent US cities. The name Fall River was derived from the Indian word Quequechan meaning falling water – the name of the stream running from Watuppa Ponds down a 200-foot drop to Mount Hope Bay. Fall River, Massachusetts, was founded on the banks of the stream.

The city of Fall River provided sports equipment, recreational facilities, and other gifts for the use of the officers and men of the USS Fall River. This included: two pianos, a combination radio-phonograph player, a large number of books, a substantial amount of athletic equipment, sporting goods, games, and a public address system used for church services and entertainment programs such as USO shows. ~Bill McGee, Bluejacket Odyssey

SIGETY SPEAKS ON FALL RIVER IN FALL RIVER FOR BICENTENNIAL: The distinguished former USS Fall River officer Charles Sigety visited Fall River, MA, in July 2003 to deliver a presentation on CA131 for the city's bicentennial celebration. Held at Fellowship Hall at the First Congregational Church, the presentation included remarks by former USS Massachusetts Memorial Committee president Joseph Feitelberg, who chronicled Battleship Cove's evolution into the world's largest historic naval ship exhibit. After the presentation, both men opened the floor for a Q&A period, which was enjoyed by all!
