On May 11, 2000, Captain John S. Casey, USNR (Ret.) was named Chief Operating Officer for Battleship Cove. Captain Casey came to the Cove after serving over 35 years in the Naval Reserve. He enlisted in 1962 and was commissioned in 1968 upon graduation from Maine Maritime Academy with a BS in Marine Engineering. He joined the Merchant Marine during the Viet Nam conflict, coming ashore in 1971 to join the Terry Corporation, a manufacturer of commercial, nuclear, and naval steam turbines.

In 1990, Captain Casey formed his own company, which specialized in asbestos and lead abatement as well as indoor air quality.

Captain Casey completed a distinguished Naval Reserve career in June of 1998. His assignments of increasing responsibility included five command tours. He served at the Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity, Naval Reserve Maintenance facility, Newport, RI, in various maintenance assignments and as its last Commanding Officer.

Active in civic affairs, he has served as Town Party Chairman and Vice Chairman, a 13-year member of the Parks and Recreation Commission, co-founder of the local Chamber of Commerce, and was elected to serve as Town Selectman.

As Chief Operating Officer, Captain Casey is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Battleship Cove.

A DIFFERENT BRANCH OF SERVICE: You might say Battleship Cove board member Kathleen Harrington is from a different branch of the service: She has served as a Sister of Mercy for four decades.

A graduate of Newport's Salve Regina College, Sister Harrington is currently the director of John E. Boyd Child Care & Development. Throughout her career, she has received numerous educational and professional awards, and she is actively involved with a myriad of local charities.
