Kennedy carried many sensors, weapons, and looks over her long life span from 1945-1972.

The Anti-Submarine Rocket (ASROC) was a ballistic missile designed to deliver the Mk 46 torpedo. ASROC weapons were relatively small devices designed to fit inside the distinctive eight-cell box launcher found on almost all cruisers and destroyers of the 1960's-1980's.

For short range attack, the Mk 46 torpedo was placed in two trainable MK 32 launchers. Each launcher carried three 12.75 inch Mk 46 torpedoes. A torpedo shop was located on the port side of the helicopter hangar area.

Kennedy's 5" 38 caliber mounts could be fired at either surface or air targets. Similar to the five-inch mounts on USS Massachusetts, these weapons provided critical fire support for land-based US troops during the Korean War, during which DD-850 earned two battle stars.

The Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter (DASH) was a remotely controlled rotary-wing ASW weapon carrier designed to deliver alternate weapon loads of 750 lb or 850 lb. Combat radius of the-drone is about 30 nautical miles, depending on loading condition, at a cruising speed of 80 knots.

Students get lost in space at Battleship Cove!

SPACE ENGINEERING: USS Kennedy played an important peacetime role during the early years of the Space Race, working closely with other Navy ships to recover Mercury and Gemini astronauts and their space capsules.

SPACE ENGINEERING, one of Battleship Cove's many hands-on workshops, allows students to create a space exploration timeline as they trace the historical role of the USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. and the US Navy in the Space Race. Exciting experiments will help students unravel the mysteries of space travel and understand the engineering behind the Space Shuttle and scientific concepts as orbital motion, inertia, velocity and gravity.
