In cooperation with the Fall River School
Department, Battleship Cove Community Boating (BCCB) formerly ran a wooden boat-building
course in which middle school students from Greater Fall River constructed plywood
boats and then took to the water at Battleship Cove. The canoes now remain
at the Community Boating Center, where they are utilized in the museums
youth sailing program.
Funded with a 21st Century Learning Centers grant and
support from the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanics Association, this innovative
program took learning beyond the traditional classroom setting. Throughout the
hands-on project, students followed detailed instructions to learn many different
industrial arts skills.
This was a very
challenging project: It pushed students to think and find their way out of difficult
challenges, explains Don Shannon, Battleship Cove's PT Boat Coordinator
and an expert on the subject of wooden boats.
Shannon,
who ran the program, was assisted by longtime volunteers Harry Miller and Roland
Cote, both Navy veterans who have contributed to the museum with projects like
the YAGR exhibit.
