The RITE Program

Funded with the generous support of Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, the RITE (Raytheon Inspiring Technology Exploration) Program is a paid, two-week externship in which professional educators learn how to make abstract academic concepts intelligible to their students by connecting classroom the curriculum to its real-world applications.

In the RITE program, teachers pair with a professional engineer and collectively decipher a technology at Battleship Cove. Teacher then develop the TECH TIME Curriculum Guide and Technology Intrepetive Panels (TIPs), which are displayed permanently throughout the museum.

A winner of Raytheon's company-wide Gold Award for Community Relations, the RITE Program is now running full steam in its fourth year. Contact the Education Department to learn more, or apply online.

TIP-TOP SHAPE: In the RITE Program, teachers design TIPs (Technological Interpretive Panels), which trace a technology’s development and associated career paths.Subsequently, these handsome four-color panels are installed throughout the Cove for the benefit of the museum’s visitors. Liz Carter, a RITE Program scholar in 2002 and RITE support staff in 2003, recently applied the concept of TIPs to her classroom . Utilizing the pedagogy of project based learning, Liz’s students create “TIPs” on a subject related to computers (above). As a multi-tasked project with measurable outcomes, the assignment provides the students with the same useful skills that a term paper or basic report provides - and it is a lot more fun! Bravo Zulu, Liz! -

The RITE (Raytheon Inspiring Technology Exploration) Program is generously sponsored by Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems.
