Why do we preserve a foreign naval vessel?

Well, that's simple. Cultivating cultural empathy is the surest path to promoting mutual respect and global harmony.

As an instrument of Communist policy, Hiddensee symbolizes the Cold War, an era in history that continues to shape the political landscape today. As we strive to understand the former Soviet regime and its dichotomous relationship to American democracy, we will develop a greater appreciation for the liberties we enjoy, and a greater compassion for those who live every day in social and political oppression.

Help us preserve Hiddensee to honor our Cold War veterans and to promote this message of peace.

SMALL COMBATANTS: Big gunships like battleships and heavy cruisers tend to dominate discussions of naval firepower, but in reality the Navy's smaller vessels are often more heavily armed, pound for pound.

For example, US Navy PT Boats were, pound for pound, the most heavily armed naval combatants of World War II, carrying an eclectic mix of machine guns, rockets, and light cannon (as well as torpedoes). Navy PBRs in Vietnam were similarly armed, and capable of delivering an awesome show of firepower from a fleet, compact platform.

As a missile corvette, Hiddensee is heir to the small combatant tradition. Speedy and armed to the teeth, this versatile coastal patrol vessel could shell surface targets, fight off air attacks, and waylay capital ships with her Styx missiles. As fast as a PT, with the ordnance to match, this formidable ship would be a handful for any opponent.
