Why do people volunteer at Battleship Cove? See below for some testimonials.

Steve Whynot, Southborough, MA: "To keep alive a symbol of a period in our history when this country came together to save the world."

Rich Angelini, Somerset, MA: "I really enjoy trying to preserve both my family's and the country's naval heritage."

Tom Cox, New Jersey: "I come to be a part of something I put in the back of my mind for over 30 years. To get together with some of my shipmates that experienced some of the same things that I did, to feel good about myself all over again."

A VERSATILE VOLUNTEER: Battleship Cove regrets to report the passing of longtime volunteer Eric Hutchins, who had greeted countless visitors on board USS Lionfish and in Newberry Hall since first volunteering as a Cove tour guide in 1996. A native of Fall River, MA, Hutchins graduated from an accelerated machinist apprenticeship program at the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, RI, where he worked on torpedoes in the station’s research department. Ordinarily this experience would have made Hutchins a perfect submariner, but color blindness prevented him from wearing the Navy uniform. The Army subsequently accepted Hutchins for service and promptly assigned him to Italy in the 88th Infantry, a unit in which he served until 1946.
