Women Protecting US
is a new exhibit at Battleship
Cove that presents a view of women in wartime. Our purpose is to highlight
women's contributions in history, and create a place of honor as a memorial to
their service. Women Protecting US is located onboard the USS Massachusetts,
a World War II battleship and site of the official veterans' memorial for the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts.* A 1,500 sq ft compartment is being prepared to
contain the exhibit and memorial space. The exhibit will open in March 2008.
Women made important contributions in science, math, medicine, engineering
technology and industry during World War II. The exhibit will provide an overview
to topics and include points for advanced research. The Museum will also reach
out to groups such as women veterans' organizations, and women's studies departments,
by developing programs and seminar events that support the unique roles of women
in the military. The issues and decisions that create world conflicts
are out of the control of the individual, but the effects of war leave a lasting
impression on the soul of the individual. Women Protecting US will be a
destination for women veterans and their families. It will encourage women to
share stories of their personal experiences and special place in history.
