Workshops for May Homeschool Day:

• Hydrodynamics and Boat Design (10:00 AM): Learn about the process of ship building throughout the last 100 years. From choice of materials, shape, rationing, and workers, put your ideas to the test and see if you could have designed a ship for the United States to use. Furthermore, transfer paper ideas into your own ship and test them out in our blow-up raceways. Activity includes materials to make a wood boat.
• Nautical Knots (11:15 AM): Learn about the history of knot tying through the ages and how sailors used different knots for different situations. Once you’ve practiced tying the ropes, race your friends in a knot relay! Activity includes materials to make a monkey’s fist keychain.
• Art of Gyotaku (1:30 PM): Take a journey back 100 years to Japan as we learn about the art of gyotaku, or fish printing. We will observe the artifacts in the U.S.S. Massachusetts that were brought back from Japan during the war as we discuss why the art form was created and how it’s still used today. After, you will be able to make your own fish print to take home!
